Marta Darby

Designer, blogger, Cuban cook, scrapbooker, photographer and mother of four, Marta Darby wears many hats—which may or may not include seasonal fruit (but that’s not important right now). Marta has been blogging for more than seven years, sharing her life, culture, family, and recipes in her own Cuban-American style at My Big, Fat, Cuban Family.

She tells the stories of her extraordinarily ordinary Cuban-American life and believes in celebrating the “everyday.” Often. And well.

What was your favorite toy as a child?

As a child, I was all about Barbie and her friends. I owned a classic ponytailed Barbie. She was still just a fashion model back then and hadn’t aspired to be an astronaut or a veterinarian at that point. Playing with Barbie was all about dressing her in fabulous outfits. I still remember the beautiful, black, beaded, mermaid-style “Solo in the Spotlight” outfit, which came with a stand-up microphone. That’s how we played back then: Each of us little girls had one doll with tons of gorgeous clothes. Playing Barbies with friends meant visiting each other and sharing the beauty.
