7 Ways to De-stress as a New Mom

Let It Go

As new moms, we know that time is a valuable commodity. We also know that being a new mom can be very stressful. You’ve got this brand-new baby who relies on you for everything and maybe you haven’t slept more than two hours in a row for the past few months. You also probably haven’t showered in what seems like days, and “coffee” has become synonymous with breathing. Since we all could use a breather, I’ve compiled a list of ways to de-stress as a new mom, all of which don’t take much time or energy but can make a world of difference!

Exercise

My number one favorite de-stressor is a good workout. Of course, remember to take it easy and get the OK from your doctor before starting anything too rigorous, especially right after labor. Even just a simple walk around the block, with baby in tow, will rejuvenate you and get those happy endorphins flowing.

Breathe In and Out

I love my weekly yoga sessions. There’s something so calming and centering about taking time to focus on your breathing. It does wonders for your stress levels, too! Stretching your body is another great way to de-stress, and something you can easily do during those little baby naps.

Take a Bubble Bath

Or, let’s be real: Even just a shower will do the trick. Put someone else on baby duty and just take a few minutes to turn on that hot water, light a candle and enjoy some "you" time. You’ll be surprised at how rejuvenated you’ll feel! If you're on your own, just put the baby in his bouncer and turn that shower on anyway!

Get Outside

Now this seems really obvious and simple, right? But when you’re in the throes of new motherhood, your brain is often jumbled up and sometimes the obvious isn't so, well, obvious. Like placing your baby in his crib for two minutes and stepping outside. Get out there, take a few deep breaths and listen to the birds — literally two minutes is all it takes.

Call the Grandparents

… Or aunt or uncle or anybody you trust, pump a bottle if you’re breastfeeding and go on a date with your partner! Even if it's just for an hour or so, I promise it will feel so good to reconnect and spend some quality one-on-one time with your partner-in-crime. And yes, you may spend the whole time talking about your baby, but that’s OK.

Write It All Out

Keeping a journal is a great way to not only remember all of the special moments in your and your baby’s life right now, but it’s also a great outlet for you. If you’re feeling particularly overwhelmed or stressed on a certain day, write out all of those feelings on paper. You may be surprised at how much better you feel afterward.

Sleep Whenever You Can

I know you’re tired (pun intended) of hearing this, but when Baby is sleeping, try to take a little catnap yourself. Forget about the dirty dishes, the piles of laundry and the toys on the floor, and just sleep! I guarantee that you will feel so much better with even a little round of shut-eye!
