What to Know
It’s graduation season, and proud parents all over are celebrating their kids’ accomplishments as they move on to the next part of their lives. This time of year is often most bittersweet for parents of older kids. Having your kid graduate high school and head to college, or even worse, graduating college and heading out into the real world, is a big deal, and unsurprisingly, it’s really hard. Jennifer Lopez is currently in that boat. The singer and actress has two kids, twins Max and Emme, who graduated high school this year. And it seems that Emme isn’t just moving on to college, but taking on a new identity as well.
The teen is going by a new name.
The 18-year-old recent graduate has been using the new name for months. Hola! reported that a social media post from Windward School, where the teen attended, made a post back in March announcing where they would be attending college.
In the post, which has since been deleted, the child formerly known as Emme was called Oskar Muñiz.
Page Six captured a screenshot of the post before it was deleted, and in addition to the name, it included a childhood picture of the teen alongside the logo for Sarah Lawrence College. According to the post, he will be studying Theater and Studio Arts.
“Oskar to Sarah Lawrence! No more impromptu NYC trips because he’ll be living there! Good thing it’s only a few hours away from Stagedoor. Go gryphons!! Congrats!!!” the post was captioned.
While dad Marc Anthony allegedly didn’t attend, a surprising family member did.
According to Page Six, Anthony skipped the graduation ceremony. However, Lopez and her mother, Guadalupe Rodríguez were in attendance, as well as twin Max. Also in attendance? Ben Affleck’s son Samuel.
Pictures obtained by the outlet show Oskar chatting with his 14-year-old former stepbrother likely after the ceremony. Another picture shows the two huddled together looking at something on a phone.
Despite the divorce, it is well documented that both Lopez and Affleck have maintained close relationships with their former stepchildren.
Jennifer Lopez opened up about life as an empty nester.
With both of her kids graduating high school, and with Oskar going to college in New York, Lopez is faced with the reality of being an empty nester. During a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” she talked about how she’s coping.
“Don’t talk about it because [I] start crying,” she said. “I’ve been crying for two months.”
She shared that reality really hit her as she wrote tributes for her kids’ yearbooks. “When I tell you, the tears — it took me two days to write those things,” she said.
Lopez also shared that she’s “fine” with her kids going to different schools. Like any mom, she wants “them to be happy and go where they want to go and do what they want to do.”
“We’re going to pack up their rooms here and they’re going to take all the things that they want to take to their dorm,” she said. “Then they’re going to realize that their dorms are too small and they’re going to miss home. I hope they’ll want to come back real soon. That’s my plan.”
But despite her jokes, she’s very excited for her babies moving into the next chapter of their lives.
“All year people were asking me, ‘They’re going away to college, is it going to be terrible?’ I’m like, ‘No. It’s going to be great,’” she admitted. “They have big dreams it’s going to be great.”
