What to Know
Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance announced Tuesday they are expecting their fourth child, a boy, due in late July.
“We’re very excited to share the news that Usha is pregnant with our fourth child, a boy,” the couple said in a joint statement released today. “Usha and the baby are doing well, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him in late July.”
The announcement continues a busy chapter for the Cincinnati Republican’s family, who moved into the vice president’s residence last January following President Trump’s second inauguration. The couple already have three children: 8-year-old Ewan, 5-year-old Vivek, and 4-year-old Mirabel.
In their statement, the Vances expressed gratitude for their support system during this time. “During this exciting and hectic time, we are particularly grateful for the military doctors who take excellent care of our family and for the staff members who do so much to ensure that we can serve the country while enjoying a wonderful life with our children.”
The Vice President has previously spoken about the unique challenges of parenting young children in the public eye. In an interview on The Katie Miller podcast, Vance described how he and his wife navigate parenting under constant public scrutiny, with Usha taking what he called a “gentle parent” approach while he opts for quick intervention when needed to protect the children from becoming “the subject of a viral moment.”
Despite the demands of the vice presidency, Vance has maintained family rituals, including making breakfast for his children and baking with them when possible. He described establishing “sacred” time with his family each day that he protects from work obligations.
The new baby will join his siblings at the vice president’s residence, the 12,000-square-foot mansion on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory that has become what Vance called “a real family home for us, which is really nice out of the public eye.”
