On Wednesday, actress Jamie Lee Curtis introduced the world to her transgender daughter, Ruby. The actress shared photos from a recent People magazine interview — which features her and Ruby — with her Instagram followers. It was clear from Jamie’s post that she is one proud mama.
Jamie was photographed with her daughter for the exclusive interview
The mother-daughter magazine spread was on full display in Jamie’s Instagram post, which included a powerful quote pulled from the piece. “Helping others is something everyone should do,” Ruby said in the story. “I don’t think it’s only our household thing. It should be a human thing.”
Jamie added her own caption to the photo, giving a sweet shout-out to her daughter. “Ruby, I am proud to be your mother,” the actress wrote. “Today more than ever.”
Ruby officially came out last year
The 25-year-old video editor told People how she shared the news with her family, including her father, Christopher Guest, while sitting outside of her parents’ Los Angeles home. “It was scary — just the sheer fact of telling them something about me they didn’t know,” Ruby recalled. “It was intimidating, but I wasn’t worried. They had been so accepting of me my entire life.”
Jamie admitted that she's struggled with getting the terminology right since Ruby's transition
The Halloween star opened up about having to make adaptations in the words she uses and even in the way she speaks. “It’s speaking a new language,” Jamie explained. “It’s learning new terminology and words. I am new at it. I am not someone who is pretending to know much about it. And I’m going to blow it, I’m going to make mistakes. I would like to try to avoid making big mistakes.”
It sounds like Jamie is committed to trying to do her daughter proud and support her in any way that she can.
For Jamie, the trick is thinking before she speaks
Jamie admitted that she still makes mistakes sometimes when talking about Ruby, but that she’s trying to learn as quickly as possible. “You slow your speech down a little,” she said, explaining how she’s trying to improve. “You become a little more mindful about what you’re saying, how you’re saying it. You still mess up — I’ve messed up today twice. We’re human.”
It sounds like Jamie is aware of how important the words she uses, and how she uses them, are to her daughter and the rest of the trans community.
The pair hopes that their interview will help others in similar situations
Jamie said one of the reasons she wanted to do this interview was to help other families going through similar experiences. “If one person reads this, sees a picture of Ruby and me, and says, ‘I feel free to say this is who I am,’ then it’s worth it,” she said.
We’re sure that the mother-daughter duo are going to reach way more than one person with their story. We’re so glad that they decided to open up together about Ruby’s transition.
