In Defense of the Mom Who Got Catfished Trying to Buy a Bowl on Walmart Marketplace

Let’s all agree on one thing. Until you’re actually a parent, you have no idea of the Olympic-level juggling act that it takes to care for your kids, care for yourself, care for your relationship, and to keep a house running smoothly.

Between the chaos of wrangling kids, making sure the fridge is stocked, staying on top of the laundry, and remembering who needs what snack for which practice, sometimes the brain just doesn’t have enough bandwidth left to double-check if a simple, everyday online transaction is about to get you virally trolled on the internet.

But, thanks to Walmart… here we are.

TikTok user Megan Schmutte posted a video that recently went viral after her mom ordered what she thought was a floral-printed bowl from Walmart. Instead, the video shows what her mom ACTUALLY received… a flat package containing a license plate with a picture of the bowl on it.

Yes, it was a bowl, but like, just a PICTURE of a bowl.

Cue the internet doing what the internet always does best. The video, which currently sits at 1.9 million views on the app, has garnered a whopping 280,000 likes, proving that people can definitely relate to Megan’s mom’s struggle one way or another.

Half of the comments sympathized with the poor mom, with some even sharing their own similar experiences.

One comment said, “I ordered lipgloss and got ink for a printer. 💔”

Another person posted, “I ordered a coffee table from Walmart and got a chicken coop 😌😌.”

Someone else wrote, “Yeah I ordered a keyboard and got a diaper bag… just make sure it says sold and shipped from Walmart.”

The other half of the crowd dragged the mom like she’d just tried to order caviar from The Dollar Store.

One commenter posted, “Does nobody else read product descriptions? It sucks, but at some point as consumers we have to also do our part.”

Another wrote, “Please tell me she’s going to display it in the kitchen.”

Someone else added, “I fear that she ordered exactly that, the listing says its metal artwork with predrilled homes.”

But honestly? Can we please cut this mom some serious slack?

Because if you’ve ever accidentally bought your kid the “wrong” Roblox gift card or ended up with size 3T leggings when you swore you clicked size 6, you know how fast online shopping can betray even the most on-top-of-it mom.

And listen, this could happen to ANYONE.

You’re scrolling late at night after packing lunches, or squeezing in a quick online order before school pickup. You see a pretty floral bowl, you click “add to cart,” and move on with your day because, well, you’ve got 97 other things to think about. No mom has the time to decode whether the fine print says “actual bowl” or “photo of bowl printed on metal license plate.” That’s Walmart’s job.

So instead of blaming the mom, let’s call it like it is.

Walmart, you’ve got some explaining to do. Stop making people jump through hoops to figure out if they’re buying a real product or a hologram of said product. Because honestly? If my kitchen ends up decorated with a license plate with a picture of a dish on it, that’s on you, not me.

And to Megan’s mom: wear this one like a badge of honor.

You’ve just joined an elite club of parents who’ve been duped by technology. And you know what? Dinner still gets served. Whether it’s in a real bowl or on a “bowl” license plate, the kids are still going to complain about what’s inside either way.
